Grade Received: The “Inspired” Assignment

You’ve been allocated an assignment and have 3 weeks to get at it but the minute you go home the juices start flowing and you can’t stop writing.

Sounds like a pipe dream doesn’t it?

I like to call these - “Inspired” assignments. They don’t come often, or even ever, but when you receive one of them you can’t help but put 100% of your effort into it.

Over the 3 years, I’ve only had a handful of “Inspired” assignments, of which not all have received the grade I had hoped for. After all, who wouldn’t want to score in something they believe they put their heart into.

That isn’t always the case however. “Inspired” assignments are pieces of work that you are proud to submit, not pieces of work that necessarily are loved by whoever is grading them - and that’s fine.

I’m not saying that grades aren’t important, but it is equally or even more important to be passionate about an assignment you are doing. In those cases, grades are secondary.

My final year project, a campaign on verbal aggression amongst couples has made me into a better person for my partner. When I submitted my report, I believe it was an A-level work because everything written in it was written with heart - but it got a B+.

Was I bummed about the B+? Definitely.

Did it make me love my project less? Hardly.

The “Inspired” assignment is something that you are proud to submit but must also be humbled with whatever grade you receive for it.

I hope that along the course of your university term, you have the opportunity to work on some of these. They are infinitely rewarding.

P.S. In a meta-sense, this post was an “Inspired” assignment because the words just kept flowing.
